Our preference has always been to deal with dynamics at the source. Detailed level automation lets us decide exactly how a performance or piece of dialogue should sit. Quiet words can be supported without dragging up noise, and loud phrases can be restrained without flattening everything else around them. The result is typically clearer, more intelligible audio that still feels natural rather than processed.
This approach also makes compression far more effective. When the big level swings are already under control, compressors can be used gently for tone and cohesion rather than damage limitation. One compressor working lightly almost always sounds better than several competing for control.
This is exactly why we built VoiceAssist. Instead of relying solely on traditional dynamics processing, VoiceAssist puts intelligent, editable automation at the centre of the workflow. It analyses the signal and generates level automation designed to smooth things out in a controlled, transparent way.
Crucially, that automation is completely visible and editable. You’re not locked into a black box result. You can adjust how fast or transparent the levelling is, refine individual phrases, or simply use it as a starting point before applying your own judgement. It removes the time-consuming part of riding levels while keeping creative control exactly where it belongs.
Once levels are properly managed, everything else falls into place more easily. EQ behaves more predictably, de-essing becomes more consistent, and compression can be applied with far lighter settings. For dialogue editors, this often means improved intelligibility without the familiar broadcast squeeze. For vocals, it means consistency without losing character or performance detail.
VoiceAssist also brings together other everyday corrective tools including intelligent gating, noise reduction, de-reverberation, sibilance control and low-frequency management. Designing these processes to work together, rather than as a long chain of unrelated plugins, helps engineers reach clean, controlled results faster and with fewer compromises.
If your current workflow relies on piling on compressors to keep vocals or dialogue in check, it may be time to rethink the approach. Automation-first workflows don’t replace compression, they make it more effective. And when automation is fast, editable and intelligently generated, it stops being a chore and starts being a genuine advantage.
If you want a cleaner, more controlled result without crushing the life out of it, try VoiceAssist on your next session. Let automation do the heavy lifting, let compression do the finishing work, and spend more time focusing on the sound rather than fighting the signal.
