GainAimPro – A short overview

GainAimPro is our new ARA powered vocal editing plugin, combines infinite lookahead vocal riding with true peak limiting, an AI powered gate and next level breath/sibilance detection with zero latency into one plugin. 2. Integration - A solution for each DAW

Depending on your DAW, integrating GainAimPro may vary slightly. We’ve developed a solution for each DAW, ensuring you can always benefit from GainAimPro. If you’re looking to set up GainAimPro in your DAW, click here. I’ve detailed the setup process for various DAWs. To summarize, there are three main ways to use GainAimPro:
  1. ARA (Audio Random Access)
    • Commonly used by plugins like Melodyne or Vocalign, ARA allows the plugin to access the entire audio clip. However, each DAW has a slightly different approach to utilizing ARA. Click here to learn how to use ARA with GainAimPro in your DAW.
  2. Audio Suite
    ProTools offers a feature called AudioSuite, which, similar to ARA, allows you to select a clip and render effects to just that clip. Click here to discover how to use GainAimPro with ProTools Audio Suite.
  3. Transfer Mode
    • The final option is GainAimPro’s transfer mode. This allows you to record the section you wish to edit directly into our plugin. Once recorded, you can adjust the audio clip as needed.

3. Work with GainAimPro for the first time

Once you’ve loaded GainAimPro onto your track or clip, you’re ready to start. Depending on your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), you might find that the waveform doesn’t appear. If that happens, I recommend watching this video here.

 

1. Analyze

First, you need to click ‘Analyze’ in the bottom right corner. GainAimPro will then detect your audio file and classify elements such as voice, breaths, sibilance, and noise. The first automation that appears is based on GainAimPro’s default settings.

2. Change Basic Settings

To adjust the automation, you can now modify various values. To make the automation more aggressive, set the speed slider to a shorter value. The ‘Target Loudness’ in LUFS-I allows you to determine the loudness level your signal will have once processed. With ‘Auto-Analyze’ activated, every change you make will automatically update the automation. You can also manually edit by clicking on the pen icon, which puts you in edit mode.

3. Modify Ride, Breath, Sibilance & Vox-Gate Settings

For detailed control over the processing of gain riding, breaths, sibilance, and silence, there’s a specific section for each. You can manage the gain riding with options like boundaries, true peak limiting, and smoothing. For the vox gate, you can set the transition time, floor level, and the duration the silence must last to be reduced. For breaths and sibilance, you can set a relative threshold to target only those breaths that exceed this threshold. Additionally, you can adjust the transition times and the reduction with the ‘range’ setting

4. Basic paramter

Target Loudness

Set up your target loudness, which is displayed in LUFSi. Choose the desired value based on your project’s requirements.

Speed Slider

This slider controls the intensity of gain adjustments. For example, setting it to 500ms means GainAimPro will divide your audio file into 500ms segments, each overlapping 50% with the previous and next segments, to measure the loudness. Based on these measurements, GainAimPro identifies where to place automation points for a more consistent loudness. Higher settings, such as 2 seconds, lead to more subtle adjustments.

Analyse

Now that the basic adjustments are complete, you’re ready to start your first analysis process. By default, ‘Auto Analyse’ is enabled, meaning each time you change a parameter in GainAimPro, it will automatically update the automation. However, for the initial analysis related to a specific audio file, GainAimPro will first identify all audio regions in your file, such as voice, silence, breaths, and sibilance. This analysis process may take some time, depending on the length of the file, but it’s a one-time process.

After the initial analysis, GainAimPro won’t need to detect audio regions again. When you hit ‘analyse’ subsequently, GainAimPro will already be familiar with the audio file and will immediately start applying your changes to the automation curve.

You always have the option to modify the automation yourself. Just click on the pen icon. In this mode, similar to your DAW, you can modify the automation of your clip. You can drag and drop to move points, double-click to create new ones, and by holding the left mouse button and hovering over multiple points, you can edit a group of automation dots.

4. Features

But now, let’s explore the powerful features of GainAimPro. We’ve promised that you’ll always maintain control over how your signal is modified. Here’s how we’ve made that possible. To prevent that GainAimPro always starts analysing by any changes enable the ‘Auto Analyse’ function.

Ride

An exceptional advantage of GainAimPro is its infinite lookahead. Whether using ARA, Audio Suite or transfer mode, GainAimPro always knows when your signal is about to get loud. GainAimPro can start reducing the signal before a loud part begins, preventing annoying pumping artefacts you might know from other vocal riders or compressors.

It also allows for processing over longer timespans, like one or two seconds.

Smooth

Smooths the gain leveling for a more natural sound.
Smooth mitigates gain increases by considering the average loudness of your signal. This is particularly useful for very fast speed settings. To counteract extreme gain boosts, select a higher smooth value.

🚨 Example to follow:

  • Set the speed slider to 100ms and smooth to 0%. Hit analyze and observe the automation changes and listen to your signal.
  • Maintain the speed at 100ms and adjust smooth to 100%. This should provide a clear understanding of how smooth functions.

Pre Filter

The pre filter applies dB(A), dB(B), or dB(C) filtering when analysing the loudness to get closer to the human perceived loudness.

Avoid Clipping (TP)

To counteract any clipping that might occur from too high target loudness, this identifies and diminishes true peak clipping.


Gain Range

Gain Range sets boundaries for the leveling automation curve when increasing or decreasing gain. However, it doesn’t overwrite settings from the Vox-Gate, Breath, and Sibilance features. The Gain Range specifically limits the leveling of the voice.

Vocal Gate and instrument Gate

Vocal Mode

In Vocal Mode, the Vox-Gate processes the signal different from a traditional gate. It ignores the signals gain, and uses AI detection to split the audio clip into voice activity and other signals. This ensures that the gate only closes or opens after or before the vocal part, without cutting the first or last syllable. This allows longer fade in/out- and longer transition times. Use the left and right lines to control the fade-in and fade-out durations. The line at the bottom controls the floor level and reduces gated parts by a fixed value in dB. The ‘Min Noise Length’ setting determines how long ‘silence must last to be recognized as such’.

Instrument Mode

In Instrument Mode, the Gate adopts a gain-based approach. Here, you have the option to set the relative threshold, adjusting how the gate responds to the instrument’s signal.

Breath and sibilance detection

When analyzing, GainAimPro identifies both breaths and sibilances. In the breath & sibilance section, you have options on how GainAimPro should process these elements. For this explanation, I’ll focus on breaths, but the settings apply equally to sibilances.

Relative Threshold

The relative threshold is based on the integrated loudness of your signal. It simply adds the integrated loudness of the signal to the threshold value. If the integrated loudness is -16dB and you set the relative threshold to -4.0dB, the threshold will be -20dB.

This is allows the same settings on very different clips to behave very similar.

Range

Limits the amount of reduction that can be applied to a breath/sibilance region in dB.

Let say you want to edit all breaths by pulling the threshold down, but you don’t want them reduced by more than 10dB. 
With a threshold setting of  -infinite and no range, all detected breaths would be fully removed.

Transition Speed

This setting specifically controls the fade-in and fade-out duration for each detected breath, avoiding any unnatural loudness jumps.
